Re-sealing an under-mount sink with a granite counter top?

My stainless steel under-mount kitchen sink has separated from the granite counter top. There is now a gap (approximately 3/8-inch) between the sink and the granite. Can I simply re-caulk the surfaces and shim the sink up from the bottom to re-create the seal? Or do I need to totally remove the sink (drain and disposal) to re-install?

Thanks,
Bill
I should add that the sink was originally installed approx 10 years ago. Is there a life expectancy for this type of thing?

  1. Texperson Says:

It should have metal supports all around the underside which are screwed into the granite on the bottom. If it does, you should be able to tighten the one which is loose or replace it. If not, you should get the granite installers out to do that. Trying to re glue it without supports will be a big job as the "glue" is probably failing all around it.
